Species of Spaces

Species of Spaces is a typographic response to George Perec's book using text from three chapters (The apartment, The apartment building, The street). This resulted in an experimental book that focuses on the spaces of the book itself instead of the content of it. Like the in the original piece, the book grows from chapter to chapter: from the spaces between words, to the spaces of the words and the finally the spaces of the phrases. I was inspired by Georges Perec's quote: “My aim is to describe what is generally never noted, what is never noticed, what is not important: what happens when nothing happens” and by Jan Tschichold’s rule that implies that “spacing should be about a middle space or the thickness of an ‘i’ in the type size used.”
